Most of you must probably know that I'm an avid Romance reader. Romance is my oxygen and a good smexy book is my guilty pleasure. I love me some Adult and New Adult contemporary books... YA? Negotiable.
Meanwhile, the Fantasy genre isn't exactly a best friend. Let's just say we're probably distant friends who see each other every once in a while but not someone I'm eager to see everyday or most of the time. But Fantasy has a lot of sub genres; Paranormal Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, High Fantasy, Science Fiction Dystopian Fantasy and whatnot.
In my teen years, I was obsessed with the Paranormal Fantasy genre. I had a fair collection of books about vampires, werewolves, angels (No, I don't have the Twilight Saga because I hate it). Urban Fantasy is fine, but not exactly a common read. But most definitely, I cringe at the mention of High Fantasy.

After having read Eragon by Christopher Paolini ages ago (which I rated 4 stars, according to Goodreads, even though I didn't really enjoy it that much) and attempted to read Eldest, I couldn't handle anymore High Fantasy books. Even my attempt to read the Percy Jackson books were a fail.
And now, now, before you start getting all defensive about the High Fantasy genre, let me explain why I cannot stand the idea:
A. There's usually too much stuff going on, basically information overload.B. Its got a different jargon that confuses the shit out of me.C. The world building is usually complicated.D. The books make my head hurt.
BUT! BUT! BUT!!! That doesn't mean that I don't get attracted to Fantasy novels. I mean, look at those gorgeous book covers! They're just calling on to me, chanting my name. I'm a sucker for amazing covers and Fantasy novels usually have the most interesting and intriguing designs ever. Yes, I do judge the book by its cover, but that discussion is meant for another time.
Soooo, fantasy novels. Yes, they're intriguing -- not just the covers, but the story plots too -- but they're exhausting to read. But since I've been working on diversifying my blog, I must, kinda against my will (keyword: kinda), step out of my comfort zone. And fairly recently, my good friend Tika had gotten me to read two Fantasy books that I actually enjoyed: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater and Zodiac by Romina Russell.
So, without further ado, here's my list of unrequited books.

So I know most of these books aren't totally High Fantasy and even readers younger than I am read a lot of these, but this genre just isn't my forte. But like I said, I'm willing to step out of my comfort zone to get these babies read!
And yes, you are seeing right. I AM ATTEMPTING TO READ A GAME OF THRONES BY GEORGE R.R. MARTIN! *DEAD*

I'm not a fan of high fantasy either, but lately have been getting into a few blended young adult fantasy like Red Queen and also Throne of Glass. Both of those are incredible and what I'd consider mild fantasy. I'd definitely give those a try, especially Throne of Glass. Incredible characters and really incredible world building as well.
ReplyDeleteI've heard a lot of great stuff about Throne of Glass, so I'm excited to read that! And for Red Queen, the moment I saw the cover, I knew I had to get my hands on it! :D
DeleteThe Sin Eater's Daughter looks amazing! I can't wait to read that one!
ReplyDeleteGreat list!
Me too! I'm hoping to read it by March when it releases! ;D Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteI love your blog design, it's gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI really want to SHADOW AND BONE, it looks so good!
Thank you! And yes, I've heard a lot of good stuff about Shadow and Bone so I'm excited to read that too! Thanks for stopping by, Erika!
DeleteI finally read Throne of Glass and it was FABULOUS! It's actually not that complicated for fantasy, I think that's part of its universal appeal. Shadow and Bone is wonderful, but the world is definitely more complicated and hard to pronounce, lol. The world is Russian Based, so at least it sort of makes sense. I just bought Seeker and I'm looking forward to reading it. I'm REALLY excited to read The Sin Eater's Daughter and Red Queen. The Bone Season is on my list today. I need to read that. Great list, I hope you enjoy them when you finally get to read them!

Oooh, seems like Shadow and Bone is kinda gonna get me a bit confused with the jargon... but I'm still going to read it anyway! Thanks for the heads up! I'm definitely stoked for Red Queen and The Sin Eater's Daughter, yessss. :D
DeleteThanks for stopping by!
That is a great list of fantasy. I tried Game of Thrones and even as a lover of high fantasy I couldn't get into it. I finished GoT but have no need to finish his series. Throne of Glass on the other hand-cannot wait for more! I have Seeker and the Red Queen on my shelf to start soon. Can't wait!
ReplyDeleteI'm not really betting on reading the rest of the series, just GoT, lol. But thanks for the heads up!
DeleteI haven't read any of these either, save Throne of Glass. I read it a while back and I would absolutely recommend it to you; Celaena, the protagonist, is extremely well developed (yes, she's tough, but she's also intelligent and happens to love fashion). I actually bought the Young Elites recently, but now it's a matter of finishing other books to get to Marie Lu's. Anyways, I hope you enjoy all ten!:)

Oooh, I'm excited to get started on Throne of Glass now. I don't have a copy of Young Elites yet, but I do have a copy of Legend by Marie Lu, so I'm probably going to read that first before I get my hands on Young Elites. :D
DeleteThanks for stopping by! :)
I know! I need to get these books wiped out of my TBR list! Thanks for stopping by! Checking out your list! :)
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait for The sin eater's daughter to be released! *-*

ReplyDeleteThey do have a lot of positive reviews so I'm going to assume I'm going to enjoy them... or not, lol. Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteI tried to read Seeker, and I just wasn't digging it. A few of these are on my TBR list, especially Red Queen and The Young Elites. We'll see if I ever read them because I just don't read a lot of fantasy either.
ReplyDeleteOooh, thanks for the heads up on Seeker! They say Red Queen is awesome, so I'm excited to check that out. Thanks for stopping by, Erin! :D
DeleteGirl. I am the same way, all I read is romance, though lately I have fallen back in love with fantasy. On my last trip the the library, I picked up the second Raven Cycle book, but I haven't started it yet. I will though!
ReplyDeleteAt least I'm not alone, lol. And yes to The Dream Thieves! I plan to read it next month! :D
Delete*sigh* I am all High Fantasy, Epic Fantasy, Dark Fantasy and basically anything that has monsters and evil and DEATH!! Hehe...
ReplyDeleteERMAGAWSH! THE RAVEN CYCLE IS SO AWESOME!! It's not high Fantasy but I love it!! 5 gazillion stars!! <3
TOG OWNS MY HEART!!
I need to read Sin Eater's Daughter! 3 more days to go! XD
Enjoy these books, TOG, Raven Cycle and The Grisha (Shadow and Bone) are all awesome! :D
I bet you do, lol! And yes, I loved The Raven Boys and I can't wait to get started on the next series. Will probably read on it next month. Thanks for stopping by, Fari! :)
DeleteYou have a beautiful blog, I just discovered it :)
ReplyDeleteI love reading fantasy - I liked The Young Elites, it has an amazing concept. Red Queen was so so for me, but it does have an epic ending which saved the book for me. Good luck reading <3
